Presenting a case study

Notes for Presenters

The Council has arranged for a prize of £100 in book tokens to be given to the best presentation each month for case presentations. Registrars and SHOs are encouraged to bring cases along. Several clinicians will be involved in deciding which is the best presentation each month, and below is some advice for presenters:

  1. Keep it brief (talk for three minutes, remember that you do not need to include all information in your presentation, as additional information may be sought in the question time at the end of your presentation).
  2. There is no need to have learnt your presentation by rote (clarity and understanding of the condition are more important when presenting than memorisation skills).
  3. We encourage "hot" cases – they do not need to be fully worked up.
  4. Please relax – we rarely bite!

How to bring a patient to a meeting

Fellows and their juniors are invited to bring patients along to the meetings. To do so, please:

  1. Email the completed case presentation form to Vivienne Jurczynski (020 7188 6399).
  2. Contact Satty Singh to find out which histopathologist will be presenting at the next meeting, by telephoning her on 0207 188 9352/ Mobile 07973 438052 then send the relevant histopathology slides to reach the histopathologist by, at the latest, the Monday morning preceding the Thursday meeting. Please attach a letter to the slides clearly stating the background history, the queried diagnoses and which meeting the patient will attend.
  3. Give your patient a form for claiming travel expenses. Download the Travel Reimbursement Form
  4. Always contact your patient after the meeting to give and obtain feedback from the meeting.
  5. After the meeting you may be invited by our Editor, Dr Clive Grattan, to submit your case presentation for publication (to the society's membership) on the website. Please do this via our website, and include comments from the meeting’s discussion.

How to upload a presentation onto the website after the meeting

Presenters of the best cases at the Society meetings will be invited afterwards to upload a summary onto the website. Invitations will be sent by e-mail so please ensure that your membership details are up-to-date.

The aim of the Case Reports will be to summarize the most important aspects of the case on a single web page followed by one or two points from the Discussion. These should not be attributable to specific members. On-line comments on the case from the membership are then invited for up to 2 months until the case is locked. The comments can be uploaded directly and will be attributed to the submitting author. In the unlikely event of complaints being made about the content of the comments the editor will have the right to remove them from the site. Complaints or queries should be sent directly to the editor.

Members uploading cases should follow the link in the invitation e-mail. Each section of the Case Summary is word-limited. Written permission for clinical photographs to be used in the presentation and uploaded into the website should always be obtained prior to the presentation. Whenever possible, clinical images should be chosen that respect the anonymity of the patient, in line with standard practice, unless the purpose of the illustration would be negated by masking or cropping.

Further developments of the website might include a voting option for the best case each year, a correspondence section or invited articles. It is your website so please let the editor know how you want it to develop.
